Big toe joint pain

Hi! Curious if anyone has recommendations for diagnosis / treatment of pain in the big toe joint. It is isolated to one side, which coincidentally is the same as the leg where I have had IT band issues in the past. Went to a podiatrist who initially thought it could be arthritis, but would love a less chronic / permanent theory :) Thanks!
