Strength training during Marathon prep?

Hi everyone,

I’m training for the NYC Marathon 2025 (first time) with 4 runs/week + 1 cross-train. I want to include strength training, so I don’t lose muscle mass (upper & lower body), and also to boost performance and prevent injuries.

Any tips on:
 • How many strength sessions per week?
 • Which muscle groups to target?
 • Recommended exercises?
 • Should I skip cross-training (biking) for strength?

Would love to hear from anyone who’s done this successfully (or can share their plan). Thanks!
