femoral shaft stress rxn/“thigh splints”

hi all,

looking for shared experiences/feedback/timelines/tips to not go insane while injured.

i have had pretty low level (like 2/10) vague R hip pain for 5 weeks following NYC. took a few weeks off due to covid and have run some shorter slower runs. definitely able to run but couldn’t shake this soreness so followed up with MD. i have an old labral tear in this hip and it felt pretty similar. i have had footwear/training related stress fractures close to 10 years years ago but been really healthy for a while. this feels no where near as painful and i am still physically able to run which i hadn’t been with past bone injuries. normal bone density/menstrual cycle/etc. no real changes in training, but ran slightly less mileage leading up to NYC than i did previous buildups (like 5-15 mpw less average).

i got an MRI to confirm this was the issue before getting a cortisone shot and the MD that read the MRI saw high grade adductor strain with the possibility of a stress response in my femoral shaft. suggested a second MRI of thigh vs hip jt which may show clearer picture. the sports MD that i followed up with in person is convinced this is a grade 2-3 stress injury and told me I won’t be running for close to 6 months. there is no fracture line and x-rays were clear. told me that boston was pretty much out of the picture at this point. started PT yesterday and they seem more optimistic that i’ll be able to complete boston (goal would be completion/keeping my streak), but still cautious because of the location. i’m on crutches non weight bearing for the time being (was told it will be a few months) and was told not to cross train at this point, and that i also won’t be able to cross train for multiple months.
