Hey everyone, excited to be here! My name is Matt, I grew up in Center City and still live downtown. I got my start running in a pair of jeans when I was fifteen on a cold December day my freshman year in high school. After that run I joined Students Run Philly Style—and thirteen years after my first season, just actually wrapped up my first season as a volunteer.
Following a few stints elsewhere—Pennsyltucky, San Francisco, Amman, and Addis Ababa—I rediscovered that Philly is home. And also that traveling with a dog is hard. Some of my favorite spots to run are Fairmount Park, West Philly, the Wiss, and the bridge.
While coming off New York Marathon injured, my pie in the sky goals for next year are running the Leadville 50 miler and Boston Marathon. If I set a personal best in Boston that would be dope, but really just trying to enjoy the journey and comeback. Working my way back from a persistent bout with plantar and piriformis syndrome in the same leg.
Favorite memory: finishing the 2022 Berlin marathon. Mid-jJly that year, I broke a toe two months while running. Three weeks out from the race, got covid for the first time. Naturally I had some serious performance anxiety before the race. The electric energy on course—I must have ran by one million people—was just surreal. Somehow everything ended up going perfect on the day—I ran a 90 minute personal best, and Eliud Kipchoge ran a world record in the same race. The breakfast beers after hit different
Fun Fact: I dabble in coaching and work a lot with marathoner and ultra runners. This year I coached two women to finishes at the Leadville 100 and UTMB Eiger 101km. I have also never run an ultra myself—though will become much more familiar with the territory soon 🙃
Looking forward to meeting people on a run soon! Happy running
Pretty open pace range: 6:45-8:45 pace depending the day
