Pace Lead Roles, Responsibilities, and Commitments

What is a Pace Lead?

A Pace Lead is a member of Endorphins who helps facilitate the events and experiences organized by the City Leads. A Pace Lead is responsible for setting, maintaining, and guiding the pace during group runs. Pace Leads play a vital role in ensuring that all runners have a safe, enjoyable, and inclusive experience. A Pace Lead serves as a friendly guide, ensuring that everyone in the group feels supported and included, whether they are new to the community or seasoned runners. A Pace Lead is also responsible for communicating clearly with their pace group, making sure that everyone knows the route, any potential hazards, and the expected pace. In rare instances, when City Leads cannot be present at runs, a Pace Lead may be given the opportunity to lead in the City Lead's absence, taking on additional responsibilities to ensure the smooth operation of the event. By fostering a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere, a Pace Lead helps build a sense of community and motivates runners to achieve their goals. The leadership provided by Pace Leads is crucial in upholding the mission of Endorphins, creating a positive and connected environment for all participants. This is an unpaid volunteer position.

What are the duties of a Pace Lead?

Runner Safety: Prioritizes the safety and well-being of runners in their group, being vigilant about any potential hazards or issues.

Communication: Provide clear instructions and updates during the run, including directions, turns, and any adjustments to the pace or route.

Pace Management: Manages the designated pace group during runs, ensuring they maintain a consistent and appropriate pace for their group. This includes willingness and capability to pace different groups when there is limited support from the team. i.e. if there are less pace leads available, changing from your standard group to a faster or slower pace group to ensure every group is supported

Leadership: Lead by example, demonstrating safe running practices, a positive attitude, and a commitment to the Endorphins community.

What is the in-person time commitment of a Pace Lead?

Pace Leads must commit to being available to lead their designated group whenever possible during their commitment period. While you do not need to pace every run that you attend, it’s important to be prepared to step up and support if the group is short on pacers. This availability is crucial for maintaining a consistent presence, fostering strong relationships with group members, and ensuring reliable leadership throughout the runs. Regular attendance by Pace Leads enables effective group management, timely resolution of any issues, and ensures that all participants have a positive experience. This commitment will be self-monitored and reviewed biannually during the renewal period.

How long is the commitment of being a Pace Lead?

The initial time commitment for new Pace Leads is 6 months. After the first 6-month period, Pace Leads will have the option to renew their commitment for another 6 months. There is no limit on how many times a Pace Lead can renew their commitment. The purpose of having start and stop periods is to offer Pace Leads the option to step down from the role, or continue on. It will be up to the individual to make the choice that best fits their life and schedule!

The commitment periods are:

  • January 1 - June 30

  • July 1 - December 31

Why is there a renewal process?

The renewal process ensures that Pace Leads remain engaged, committed, and effective in their roles. It helps maintain high standards of leadership by regularly assessing the commitment and performance of each Pace Lead. This process also allows for the integration of new leaders who are passionate about the community and ready to step up. By offering a structured renewal process, we ensure that leadership within the Endorphins community remains strong, dynamic, and aligned with the community’s values.

How does the renewal process work?

Thirty days before the renewal date (May 31 & December 1), Pace Leads will undergo a self-evaluation to assess their ability to meet the expectations and in-person commitment required for the role. During this period, they will be asked if they can continue to fulfill the responsibilities associated with being a Pace Lead. If they confirm their commitment, they will remain in the role for the next term. However, if they determine that they cannot fully commit, they will need to step down, allowing for a smooth transition and the potential for new members to take on the role. This process ensures that all Pace Leads are fully engaged and dedicated to the community’s goals.

How to Become a Pace Lead?

Pace Leads are selected from within the existing group of committed runners who have demonstrated leadership potential and a strong connection to the community. Typically, Pace Leads have been members for at least three months, ensuring they have a solid understanding of Endorphins and the local group dynamics. During each commitment renewal cycle, current Pace Leads will decide whether they would like to continue in their role or step down. Once the City Leads and Pace Leads have a clear understanding of how many current Pace Leads will remain, they will assess the number of new Pace Leads needed.

If more Pace Leads are needed, an application form will then be sent out to the community to gather interest from runners who wish to step into the Pace Lead role. City Leads and existing Pace Leads will review the applications and select the appropriate number of existing members to join as Pace Leads. Selected runners must fit the role description and demonstrate their ability to commit to the responsibilities for a six-month period. This process ensures that all Pace Leads are well-prepared to uphold the mission and values of Endorphins, contributing positively to the community.
