Hitting the Wall NYC Marathon

Hey All - NYC Marathon was a top 5 life experience!! — but didn't quite go as planned, question regarding hitting the wall/fuel/hydration…

Yesterday’s run I hit the wall wayyy earlier than expected; I was feeling really good (running a decent pace, but not going all out) however, around mile 12-13 as we headed through Queens and up the bridge both quads started to lock up and I began to cramp out - pretty much walked/ran from there hitting up every med tent along the way for salts, ice, etc. etc. I was able to gut it out (like many others out there!!)

Throughout training I was really conscious of ensuring I was adequately fueling - and throughout all the runs never experienced cramping or really had any issues with hydration - even running in the summer heat all those miles.

Any thoughts or words of wisdom to share on this topic - is race day just a different beast and we should think about extra fuel of some sort to push us through, knowing we are probably going hard?
